Self-confidence does wonders for people’s mood, mental health, and the relationships they have with others. However, it can be tough to put it into practice. Building confidence in yourself takes time, and it can be a tricky hurdle. The cosmetology industry has made some significant strides to help women and men increase their self-confidence. However, it’s difficult to know where to start and what products or procedures will best help you. So, we asked aesthetic nurse Rena Abdinova, co-founder of City Laser Clinic, for her expert opinion on the subject.
Who is your typical patient?
We have every type of patient here. From those who are just beginning their journey with skincare to those who are very knowledgeable about skin care treatments and procedures. We see anyone who wants to try something new or who wants to continue their skincare with us. It’s important to remember that skincare is self-care and self-care is for everyone.
Do you treat women and men?
We are lucky to service a diverse clientele that comes from the San Francisco Bay area. As a gender-neutral clinic, we welcome every person interested in trying something new for their skincare.
What are some fears that people have when they come to your office?
We live in challenging times. The pandemic has contributed greatly to the levels of stress that we all experience. A lot of us have to juggle careers and family life, working from home and managing kids distance learning schedules. During your visit we strive to deliver the feeling of comfort, ease and trust to our patients, so they have one less thing to worry about. Fears vary from patient to patient, but the most common would probably be a fear of the unknown. When a client does not know what to expect, it can be scary, so they may feel a little anxious with new procedures. Patients come in wanting to look refreshed. “Make me look less angry” seems to be a message we get a lot from patients that participate in some sort of video conferencing due to their work. We stare at our faces so much more now than ever before and there’s lots of research showing that there are negative emotional consequences to seeing yourself in a mirror. To help ease patient’s fears, we try to walk our clients through the procedure during the consultation so they have an idea of what to expect. We also provide after-care instructions so clients know what the recovery process is. Most treatments have minimum or no downtime.
What services do you offer at your clinic?
At City Laser Clinic we offer a variety of treatments. Laser hair reduction services can be useful, though they are not effective on blond- or grey-haired individuals. Facial rejuvenation services like Clear and Brilliant, a gentle laser treatment used to refresh the skin, are also available. Another laser facial treatment, known as IPL, is used to target any pigment issues with the skin, such as dark spots or age spots. Chemical peels are also available. This treatment is done using a chemical solution that exfoliates the skin and eventually causes it to peel, replacing old skin cells with fresh, new ones. Micro-needling treatments can be done with or without PRP. It is a treatment that involves pricking the skin with small, sterilized needles. The healing effects can cause a younger appearance. Neuromodulator injections like Botox or Dysport and variety of dermal filler injections, are also available. Finally, we also provide IV drip therapies to boost your immune system or detox. As well as a variety of skin care products.
With so many options available, how do I know what treatment is best for me?
Clients’ needs vary from one person to the next, so the best place to start is an in-person consultation. We can discuss individual client’s goals and the best course of action to take to achieve them. When clients walk into the office they know what they don’t like about their appearance, it’s our job to provide the best solution and a procedure.
What preventative procedures do you recommend for your patients?
Any procedure that will tighten the skin and aid with collagen and/or ellastine production. Clear and Brilliant, IPL photofacials, and micro-needling are great procedures to prevent signs of aging. These procedures enhance collagen and tighten pores. Neuromodulator injections, like Botox and Dysport, are a great way to prevent heavier lines from forming. There are some things that people can do at home by using products like Retin-A at the lowest dosage, Vitamin-C serum, a good moisturizer layered with Vitamin C serum or a hyaluronic acid-spiked product is best. SPF 30+ as a daily preventative measure.
What are some of the most common procedures people in their 40s should consider?
Which procedures work best depends on the client’s needs. Genetics, lifestyle, overall health, and hormonal changes also play a role in the way our skin appears. It might look thinner, more dehydrated, uneven skin tone, or adult acne are common after 40. We recommend Clear and Brilliant, IPL and dermal injections are common procedures that are helpful for someone in their 40s, or really any age.
What treatment do you recommend for 40+ patients to treat skin sagging?
As we age, collagen and elastin in our skin break down, which leads to wrinkles that are visible. Collagen keeps our skin firm while elastin gives it that bounce. Cell renewal continues to decline, and this can lead to a complexion that’s duller, less bright, and radiant. Definitely Clear and Brilliant, micro-needling with PRP, Botox or Dysport, and dermal fillers following with good quality professional skin care at home is very important.
What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance that is injected under the skin. They are used to plump areas like lips and cheeks to correct volume loss. Fillers can also correct deep lines and folds in areas around the nose and mouth. Botox or Dysport, however, are neurotoxins. Instead of filling in space, the goal here is to prevent a certain muscle from contracting. Botox or Dysport are usually used on the forehead and around the eyes to improve crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines.
Are Botox injections safe and what are some benefits of using Botox?
While it is a good idea to discuss with your provider whether Botox is right for you at this point in your life, Botox injections are safe and have been used for decades. Botox is most often associated with treating and preventing wrinkles, but it can be used to reduce underarm sweating as well. It has also been used to help treat patients who suffer from many different conditions, including frequent migraines, overactive bladders, crossed eyes, muscle spasms, etc.
Are Botox injections painful and how long do they last?
The needles used for these injections are small, so any pain felt during the injection would be minimal. We try to make our patients feel as comfortable as we can and offer to apply topical anesthetic which makes the experience virtually painless. Botox should also not be painful after the injection. If you do feel pain afterwards, you should talk to your provider. Results are seen in 7 -10 days after injection and the effect can last up to 4 months depending on the individual.
Can Botox/fillers look natural?
There is a common misconception that Botox will make you look frozen and it certainly can. It is possible to achieve a natural look, however, and that’s what we advise. We usually start with a small amount to ensure patients are comfortable with their new look. After about two weeks, we bring them in for a complimentary follow up visit to get their optimal result.
What impacts do these procedures have on your patients’ lives?
Every treatment we offer at City Laser Clinic has its own benefits. These procedures can have a major impact on a patient’s self-confidence, love, and pleasure, which in turn impacts various other facets of their lives. We hear a lot of feedback from patients on the improvements these changes make. Improving a patient’s quality of life is what pushes us to continue what we do here. Listen, we all want to feel good, and feeling good sometimes comes from looking good, eating well, and just taking care of yourself. No matter what you do, own it, take charge of feeling good, I know it can be hard at times when you are running busy lives and your priorities are constantly shifting. Have a procedure done, get that skin glowing. Looking good increases our self-esteem, it really does. Stay away from those UV rays; use sunscreen, nourish your skin from inside out, hydrate. Do things for yourself, it’s important to show love and care for your body. And maybe turn off that camera when you are on your next Zoom call to lower ‘Zoom fatigue’.
We share your outlook on self-love, pleasure, and wellness and promote prioritizing our wellbeing above all. Read more on these topics and more at vibeplanet.org.
